Yes, 2016 is definitely great year for wine made in the Rhone Valley part of Southern France. This is the second 2016 CDP we have tasted and it is tops. Elegantly balanced, even keeled, Raspberry, spice, fresh herbs and lollipop notes. $49. It will marry well with most food choices.
A little wine history:
Bernard Magrez is a top producer of wine in France. Chateauneuf Du Pape AOC is located in the Rhone Valley in Southern France. It compromises about 8000 acres of land. CDP means the “Pope’s new castle”. In the 1300’s Pope Clement the V relocated the papacy to Southern Rhone, France, Avignon. It is said he loved wine. A castle was soon built for the pope and thus CDP or Chateauneuf Du Pape was created.
