A gorgeous expression of California Syrah. Big, bold, viscous and delicious. Blueberry, blackberry and boysenberry notes dominate this perfectly balanced wine. The long finish coats your tonsils with childhood memories of your mama’s baked summer berry pies. At $30 a bottle Obsidian Ridge makes a perfect Syrah.

Food pairing: I would suggest a simple dish like slow roasted Turino white truffle and mushroom stuffed Canadian pheasant. Slow roasted over Maui lava rocks sprinkled with pink Himalayan salt every 13 minutes to impart an acidic balance to the crisp skin that is developing over the smokey lava rock flames. When finished cooking drizzle with a Godiva chocolate wine reduction sauce. Serve over Vietnamese wild rice steamed in NYC tap water with a New Jersey beef bouillon cube so the rice acquires a meaty essence. Enjoy! – Keith Ian
